YOUTH WOODWORKING INSTRUCTOR


Reports To: Youth Programs Manager

Hours: 40 per Week, Monday - Friday 8:30am-4:30pm

Type: Seasonal, June 24th - August 30th

Compensation: $20 per hour

Training will take place in early-mid June

Program Overview: 

The youth programs at The Center for Wooden Boats explore small craft maritime skills and heritage in a dynamic hands-on environment on Lake Union. Instructors teach beginner to intermediate skills in after school sailing and weekend programs for youth ages 8-15. CWB’s youth programs promote self-confidence and foster skills in observation, decision-making, and team work while sailing in 8’-12’ classic wooden boats.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the safe and fun delivery of the youth programs

  • Create and follow lesson plans, teach and assess student skills aligned with curriculum

  • Be a positive role model for all youth participants and junior instructors

  • Ensure a high level of safety for all activities

  • Teach alone and with a co-instructor groups of 10-15 students at a time

  • Mentor junior instructors and summer programs interns

  • Able to lift light to medium weight (20-50 lbs) solo and/or heavy objects (50-100 lbs) with assistance

  • Ability to problem solve, work independently and as a team member

  • Comfort speaking with parents and guardians

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications

  • 1 + years experience working with youth

  • Carpentry skills working in a shop, proper tool safety and knowledge ·

  • Basic knowledge of wooden boat construction and skill using power and hand tools

  • Able to cut wood and help youth design projects
