Bill Garden Boatshop Classes


Intro to epoxy (Sponsored by Chesapeake Light Craft): September 28th

In this 3 hour class you'll learn epoxy safety, fillet techniques, applying fiberglass tape over fillets, fiberglassing over wood, fill-coating fiberglass, rail lamination, and how to install a breasthook. No pre-requisite required. This is a great class to take if you are looking to build a Chesapeake Light Craft boat kit!

Half Hull Model Making: October 5th-6th

In this class students will learn how to make their own half hull model of CWB’s favorite Livery boat, Blanchard Jr. Knockabout. Half Hull model making is a timeless and fun way to scale down the lines drawings of a vessel to make a beautiful model for your wall. Students will laminate the waterlines of the vessel and then carefully carve the designed shape of the vessel smooth. This is a fantastic, hands on, experience to get really intimate with a vessels shape.

Shaker Box: October 12th-13th

Made as early as the late 1700’s, these shaker boxes created a reputation for themselves because of the craftmanship, style, and versatility. “Shakers” originally made them in New Lebanon, New York and the legacy has been passed down for generations. Good for storing dry goods or trinkets!

In this two day class, you will carve, steam-bend, and rivet your boxes together.

There are no prerequisites for this class.

Caulker’s Stool: October 20th

This foldable wheeled stool was designed for traditional Caulking (Corking) of seams in decks and boat hulls. Found in boat yards across the world as early as the 1800’s, this versatile stool is a must have for any Shipwright’s toolkit.

In this one day class, you will layout, cut, and assemble your stool.

Women’s Beginning Woodworking: November 9th-10th

This beginning woodworking class is for women (non-binary and trans inclusive) interested in learning how to use basic wood-working tools skillfully and safely. This class is centered on building a small project, usually a step stool, in order to teach the fundamentals of carpentry. Students will learn how to identify lumber grain and direction; surface plane to mill a of lumber to thickness; joint the edge of a plank straight; Rip lumber safely on a table saw to dimension; as well as how to use a drill with countersink, round over edges with a router, sand a surfaced smooth, and cut curves on a bandsaw. A great way to prepare yourself to taking more advanced woodworking and boatbuilding classes.

About the Instructors

 

Ducky

Ducky grew up in the Pacific Northwest and has spent the last 10 years restoring historic ships and building small skiffs. They have also been commercial salmon fishing in Alaska nearly every summer. They got their start at the Center when they were a teenager and now they’re back teaching in the Bill Garden Boatshop!

Tyler Schaffer

Tyler was raised on a lake in the Rocky Mountains and became fascinated by plywood boats after receiving a Glen-L boats book as a teen and has become hooked ever since. Tyler now enjoys sharing his knowledge and interest in contemporary boat building and restoration with others. His other woodworking interests include cabinet building, millwork, furniture design, and finishing. When not teaching in the Bill Gardnen Boatshop, Tyler can be found on one of his many boats, house projects, or fishing.

  • Cancellation more than 30 days in advance: refund less a $50 administrative fee.  

  • Cancellation 30-15 days in advance: 50% refund of the course fee.  

  • Cancellation 14 or fewer days in advance of the course: No refund.
